There is no doubt about it- the supplemental education market is exploding. With overcrowded classrooms and parents trying to juggle work and home life, tutors are now becoming a must for a lot of students to succeed. If you have considered starting your own business, the time is right for you to start a tutoring business!

1-Set your own schedule and work with whom you want.

When you have your own tutoring business, you can schedule your clients around your schedule and choose which clients you want to work with each day. Some parents have unrealistic goals for their children and you may decide these aren't the clients you want to tutor. Also having the flexibility to work when you want to work is a great daily motivator!

2-Work where you want.

Some tutors work out of their home. This is great in the event you experience no-shows. (Working with high school kids this will happen!)

This way you have risked no gas to drive and really no time. You may choose to work at a local coffee house or library or maybe the student's house. There are advantages to choosing all of these places to work, but you control where you work.

3-You control your hourly rate!

As a private tutor, you have certain skills that will attract new clients therefore you can control your hourly rate. Of course it is recommended to check your area to see what other tutors are charging, but parents will seek you out for your enthusiasm and subject knowledge. Don't be afraid to charge $40, $50, or $60 / hour.

4-Little to No Start Up Costs

There are very few start up costs as an independent tutor. You may consider doing flyers or a small advertisement in your neighborhood newsletter or newspaper, but overall you will have little costs involved. There are some great free resources for marketing your tutoring business and word of mouth is a great way to grow your tutoring business fast!

5-Make a Difference

The best reason of all to start a tutoring business is the incredible effect you will have on your students. Students will look to you as a mentor and a friend and it is the perfect opportunity to truly make a difference in the life of a young person. You have the ability to get them excited about the subject material, about learning and overall to boost their confidence (and grades). A confident student will be an eager student and as a tutor you will truly make a difference in their life.
